History of the Foundation

1965

With Dentsu’s endowment of the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Hall (the refurbished former residence of Yoshida Hideo in Tokyo’s Shinagawa Ward; hereinafter referred to as the “Memorial Hall”) and a financial contribution of 140 million yen, the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Foundation was established with the approval granted by the Ministry of Education (currently the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology)

1966

The Memorial Hall officially opened with the completion of the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Library (“Library”)
Donated a research fund to the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo for the advancement of advertising research. The annual grant continued until 1972.

1967

Presented the first annual research grants to full-time university researchers

1978

Transferred the Memorial Hall building to the Shinagawa Ward
The office and the Library moved to the Ginza Eight Building

1985

Invited the novelist Inoue Yasushi as a guest speaker for the 20th anniversary commemorative lecture

1987

The office and the Library moved to the Dentsu Ginza Building

1995

Published a commemorative pamphlet and a comprehensive list of research grants for the 30th Anniversary

1997

Published The History of Advertising Research in Japan for the 30th anniversary special project

1998

Fully renovated and renamed the Library as the Yoshida Hideo Memorial Advertising Library

2001

Introduced the Asia Program as part of the project for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yoshida Hideo
Started the Consumer Omnibus Survey

2002

Opened The Ad Museum Tokyo (“The Museum”) in Shiodome, a resource center complete with an advertising library, as part of the project for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yoshida Hideo

Founded the Yoshida Hideo Research Grant Award

Published Ad Studies, a quarterly magazine for research and public relations

2005

Held the 40th anniversary commemorative ceremony
Published Advertising Talks, a pictorial record of the collections in The Museum

2011

Accredited as a public interest incorporated foundation

2015

Released the 50th anniversary commemorative website

2016

50th anniversary of research grant

2017

Fully renovated and reopened The Museum

2018

Launched the School of Advertising, an educational project that makes the most of the database of Foundation’s advertising resources

2020

Published The Edo Creative Style: Edovertising
